French Belle Époque Medallic Art
Pierre-Victor Dautel
“Élégie”
French Bronze Medallic Plaquette • Rome 1904 • Maier 255
Original French bronze medallic plaquette titled Élégie by Pierre-Victor Dautel (1873–1951), designed in Rome in 1904 and subsequently issued by the Monnaie de Paris.
Obverse & Reverse
The obverse depicts an expressive young woman in profile looking upward, her hair partially covered and adorned with laurel. ÉLÉGIE is inscribed prominently in the exergue, with Dautel’s signature along the lower edge and ROME / 1904 at lower right.
The reverse presents a strikingly atmospheric Italian landscape with a tall tree rising among ancient architectural ruins, an evocative scene associated with the Roman countryside. Specialist cataloging describes the composition as a cypress among classical ruins.
Rome, Villa Medici & the Origin of the Title
The design has a particularly interesting connection to Dautel’s period in Rome. He created the portrait in 1904 while residing at the Villa Medici.
The composition was reportedly first conceived under the title La Muse de Leopardi, referring to Italian Romantic poet Giacomo Leopardi, before being retitled Élégie at the request of the Monnaie de Paris. The final title evokes the traditional elegy — a lyrical expression of mourning, reflection, and melancholy.
Catalog References & Issue
The plaquette is documented in specialist references as Maier 255 and CMP vol. 3, p. 121 F.
A historical Noonans catalog records the design as created in Rome in 1904 and issued by the French Mint in 1907.

Antique Fitted Presentation Case
Presented in an antique fitted hinged presentation case with green silk lining and fitted velvet interior. The case appears period and is closely fitted to the plaquette.
We have not established whether the case was originally issued with this particular example.
Condition
The bronze displays an attractive aged surface with toning, patina variation, scattered marks, and handling wear. The sculptural relief remains exceptionally expressive, particularly in the upward-looking portrait and the atmospheric landscape on the reverse.
The fitted case shows substantial age-related wear, including exterior rubbing, deterioration around the hinge, worn interior fabric, and loose or frayed silk trim. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
A compelling example of early 20th-century French medallic art, bringing together Dautel’s Prix de Rome-era work, the artistic environment of the Villa Medici, classical Roman imagery, and the literary theme of the elegy.
