French World War I Medallic Art

1914 French WWI
“Reims Cathedral Victim of Vandalism”

Bronze Commemorative Medal

Original French World War I bronze medal commemorating the bombardment and burning of the historic Notre-Dame Cathedral of Reims in 1914.

Inscription & Design

The obverse bears the French inscription:

LA CATHÉDRALE DE REIMS VICTIME DU VANDALISME 1914

“Reims Cathedral, Victim of Vandalism, 1914”

At center is a detailed depiction of the western façade of Reims Cathedral surrounded by flames and smoke. Below is a fleur-de-lis shield over branches or palms, invoking the cathedral’s historic importance to France and its centuries-long association with the coronation of French kings.

Historical Context

On September 19, 1914, during the opening phase of World War I, German artillery struck the cathedral and ignited scaffolding surrounding the building. The resulting fire caused severe damage and generated international outrage.

The destruction of Reims Cathedral became one of the best-known French and Allied symbols of wartime destruction and was widely invoked in contemporary propaganda.

Reverse, Hallmark & Attribution

This is a uniface medal, meaning the reverse was intentionally produced without a design.

The edge bears the French cornucopia hallmark followed by BRONZE, characteristic of medallic production associated with the Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint).

Published specialist references attribute this design variously to French medalists Ch.-L. Picaud and Édouard-Pierre Blin (1877–1946).
